About Mathias

Mathias was born in Stockholm, Sweden and his love of golf began at the age of 10  He won the Swedish Boys Championship in 1988 and the British Youths Championship in 1990. That year he helped Sweden to win the Eisenhower Trophy, a biennial international amateur competition open to teams of three or four players from all nations, and he picked up the individual title at that event.  That year laid the grown work for Mathias to begin his professional career.

Mathias first started on the Challenge Tour, and then he went on to the European Tour from 1994 to 2003, winning four European Tour events in that time. His best finish on the European Tour Order of Merit was tenth in 1998. However, he was keen to join the PGA Tour in America, as his primary residences are in the states, and in 2003 he placed first.  His best finish in a tour event to date is a tie for 3rd place at the 2007 Valero Texas Open.

Mathias won his first event on the Nationwide Tour in 2009 at the Melwood Prince George's County Open where he won by six strokes.

In August 2008 the first Mathias Grönberg Trophy event took place in Sweden.  The event was designed to instill a love of golf in children, as a father of 3; children’s’ causes are near and dear to Mathias.
